I have been making these lemon drop martinis for quite a while and it is easily one of my favorite cocktails. I decided to order one at a restaurant and quickly realized that my lemon drop martini and the lemon drop martinis of the restaurant world are not the same. Often they add triple sec or citron vodka, whereas when I make them at home I use fresh ingredients making the flavor so much better!

Fun Facts About the Lemon Drop Martini

🍋 Inspired by Candy: The Lemon Drop Martini was named after the classic lemon drop candy, which has the same sweet-tart flavor balance.

🍸 A ‘Martini’ in Name Only: While it’s called a martini, the Lemon Drop doesn’t contain traditional martini ingredients like gin or vermouth. Instead, it falls into the sour cocktail category, alongside classics like the Whiskey Sour.

🎬 A Hollywood Favorite: The Lemon Drop Martini gained extra popularity in the early 2000s when it was featured in the hit TV show Grey’s Anatomy, becoming one of Dr. Meredith Grey’s favorite drinks.

🌎 One of the First Modern “Fancy” Cocktails: When it was created in the 1970s, cocktail culture was shifting toward more refined, stylish drinks, and the Lemon Drop fit right in—especially among the growing popularity of vodka-based cocktails.

Ingredients & Why They Matter

  • Vodka – Choose a good, high quality vodka that will have a smooth taste and no harsh burn. I like the Kirkland Signature American Vodka from Costco. You can compare it to Grey Goose. Obviously, use your favorite.
  • Fresh-Squeezed Lemon Juice – This is non-negotiable for me. Always use fresh squeezed lemon juice. I typically get a big bag of lemons and juice them all at once. This is my favorite citrus juicer.
  • Simple Syrup – For adjusting sweetness to taste. Simple syrup is called simple for a reason. Use a 1 to 1 ratio of sugar (I use organic cane sugar) and water. Heat until the sugar is dissolved. This can be done in a microwave or on the stove.

How to Make a Lemon Drop Martini

  • Step 1: Chill your martini glass (optional: sugar rim for added sweetness)
  • Step 2: Combine ingredients in a cocktail shaker with ice
  • Step 3: Shake vigorously for the perfect chill and dilution
  • Step 4: Strain into a martini glass and garnish

Why You Should Shake a Lemon Drop Martini

  • Chilling the Cocktail Quickly: Shaking with ice rapidly chills the drink, giving it that crisp, refreshing quality.
  • Proper Dilution: The vigorous motion of shaking helps slightly dilute the drink. It softens the alcohol’s bite while keeping the flavors balanced.
  • Emulsifying the Ingredients: Since this martini contains fresh lemon juice and simple syrup, shaking properly combines these ingredients, creating a smooth, well-mixed cocktail with no separation.
  • Aeration & Texture: Shaking introduces tiny air bubbles, creating a slightly frothy, silky texture that enhances the drinking experience.

Why Stirring Isn’t Ideal for a Lemon Drop Martini

  • Doesn’t Mix Citrus Well: Stirring is best for cocktails that contain only spirits (like a classic Martini or Old Fashioned). Since the Lemon Drop contains fresh lemon juice and simple syrup, stirring won’t blend them as effectively.
  • Less Chilling & Dilution: Stirring cools the drink more slowly and doesn’t aerate it, resulting in a cocktail that’s less crisp and balanced.

Final Verdict: Shake it! Always shake a Lemon Drop Martini with ice for at least 15 seconds before straining—it’s the key to achieving the perfectly balanced, ice-cold, and smooth martini! 🍋🍸
