These Morning Milkshakes are one of my son’s absolute favorites (second only to things like blueberry muffins and scones!). They’re a delicious, wholesome, and satisfying way to start the day—and the best part? They come together in minutes with real food ingredients and no protein powder.

This high-protein breakfast smoothie is naturally sweetened with banana and maple syrup, and it’s packed with nourishing ingredients like collagen, Greek yogurt, and blueberries. It’s smooth, creamy, full of flavor, and gives you that feel-good energy to take on your morning—whether you’re fueling up for a busy workday, heading out the door with kids, or recovering after a workout.

Collagen adds a clean source of protein that supports skin, joints, and gut health, while Greek yogurt provides even more protein and gut-friendly probiotics. Blueberries bring a boost of antioxidants and natural sweetness, and cinnamon and vanilla round everything out with warm, cozy flavor.

This is the kind of from-scratch breakfast that proves simple can still be special—and so, so good.

Why You’ll Love This Morning Milkshake

  • Made from scratch with nourishing ingredients
  • High-protein and naturally sweetened
  • No protein powder or refined sugar
  • Quick and easy for busy mornings
  • The kids will feel like it is a treat (milkshakes for breakfast!?)

Ingredients Overview

  • Here’s everything you’ll need to make this wholesome, high-protein breakfast milkshake from scratch:
    • 2 cups milk – Use whole milk for richness, or your favorite dairy-free option like almond or oat milk.
    • ½ cup collagen powder – Adds a clean boost of protein and supports skin, joints, and gut health. This is my favorite collagen powder
    • 3 tablespoons maple syrup – Naturally sweetens the shake with a hint of warm flavor. Please make sure you buy pure maple syrup, not the fake stuff.
    • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract – Enhances the flavor and adds a cozy sweetness.
    • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon – For a subtle spice that pairs perfectly with banana and blueberries.
    • ½ cup Greek yogurt – Adds creaminess, protein, and gut-friendly probiotics. Full-fat or no-fat, up to you!
    • 1 cup frozen blueberries – Rich in antioxidants and natural color + flavor.
    • 1 ripe banana – Naturally sweet and adds thickness.
    • 1 cup ice – Makes the milkshake cold and refreshing.
    • Yields: about 3½ to 4 cups (2 generous servings or 3-4 smaller ones). We usually pair this with something savory like scrambled eggs, sausage or my Bacon, Egg and Cheese Muffins.

Step-by-Step Instructions: How to Make a Morning Milkshake

Step 1: Add the liquid ingredients to your blender

Pour 2 cups of milk into the blender, followed by ½ cup of collagen powder, 3 tablespoons of maple syrup, 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract, and 1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon. This helps everything blend smoothly right from the start. These are my Favorite Blenders: Vitamix or this Deluxe Cooking Blender

Step 2: Add the yogurt for creaminess

Scoop in ½ cup of Greek yogurt. This adds richness, protein, and a lovely tang that balances the sweetness.

Step 3: Toss in the fruit

Add 1 cup of frozen blueberries and 1 banana. The blueberries bring antioxidants and a beautiful color, while the banana adds natural sweetness and a creamy texture.

Step 4: Finish with ice

Add 1 cup of ice to make the milkshake cold and refreshing. If you like it extra thick, you can add a bit more.

Step 5: Blend until smooth

Blend everything on high speed for about 45–60 seconds, or until the milkshake is silky smooth and evenly blended. Scrape down the sides if needed and blend again briefly.

Step 6: Serve immediately

Pour into a glass (or two!) and enjoy right away while it’s cold and frothy. Garnish with a sprinkle of cinnamon or a few extra blueberries if you’re feeling fancy!

Variations & Add-Ins to Customize Your Morning Milkshake

  • Swap blueberries for strawberries or mixed berries
  • Add chia seeds or flaxseeds for some added fiber
  • Throw in a shot or two of espresso for an energizing kick
  • Add a handful of spinach for an optional green boost
  • Try coconut milk and shredded coconut for a tropical twist
  • Use almond or oat milk for a dairy-free version

Serving Suggestions

  • Serve with some added savory protein for a full breakfast. We like scrambled eggs, sausage or my Bacon, Egg and Cheese Muffins.
  • Great post-workout recovery drink – a reward for working so hard.
  • You can store in the fridge for up to 24 hours (shake before drinking), but it is best served immediately.
  • Freeze in popsicle molds for a healthy treat the kids will go crazy for!

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Can I use protein powder instead of collagen?
    • Sure can! You could even use both if you wanted.
  • What’s the best milk for this shake?
    • I use whole milk. If I had my way I would use raw milk – but that is hard to find here in CO. Whatever milk you have is great.
  • Is this shake good for kids?
    • Absolutely – My son asks for these milkshakes weekly!
